So, let's get on with it. When looking at the title of this post some of you may immediately think, "Who is he?" While others will think, "I know that phrase." As most of you know by now, I'm not Christian, but my family was (is though not in practice) and during my childhood this title was something I heard-often. Due to recent events I can honestly say that I'm an official believer in this title. He (whoever "he" is to you) does work in mysterious ways. Allow me to explain...
Okay, so do you remember a few posts ago, when I was complaining (but accepting) that I did not get to do all the things I expected to do in India? It was titled "The Thing About India Is...". I discussed my pre-India hopes of having wild journalist adventures in this country, but found that many of these hopes had come to amount to nothing. Well, that's the funny thing about "him" (or maybe "her"). They're always listening. Just about a week after that post I heard some class mates talking about visiting a girl's orphanage. I immediately jumped on the opportunity. It was truly an experience.
First, I need to just point this out, because it even surprised me (thought perhaps I should n't be so shocked). Every girl in that orphanage knew who Justin Bieber was. No joke. They knew him and loved his song "Baby" which they kept requesting me to sing. I brought up Disney and they starred at me blankly, but Bieber is what had them hooked. Oh, Western pop stars, I wonder if you know how far your reach really is?
They also knew the famous song "Waka Waka" by Shakira. Of course, despite me being an American, they asked me to sing it. They were kids, so I obliged, however begrudgingly.
Also, I think this needs to be cleared up. America doesn't really have orphanages (or we don't use the term at least ) and so when I think of an orphanage images of "Oliver Twist" and a red head named "Annie" living in a run down building came to mind. However, the orphanage wasn't like this at all. I mean it wasn't the Taj Mahal ( neither is my small apartment), but it wasn't some ominous building stripped down of any attractive quality. The girls were sweet. They had food, water, good clothes and no one was going, "Please, Sir, can I have some more?"
The only thing that bothered me about this trip was that my Indian friends told the kids we would be coming back the following week. The NGO we were working with doesn't guarantee the same orphanage every time meaning that we may never see these girls again and so in an indirect way I was made a liar. Or at least that's how it felt. They were so happy and their hopes were up, but we haven't returned since then. I'm going to try and go back before I return to the States.
So, how else does he work in mysterious ways? Well, that same week I met a fellow American (African American to be specific). We decided to hang out an I discovered that her experience in India had been SO different from mine. She was a graduate student and so she had lots more freedom. I mean like going out, partying until 5AM freedom. That's a big slap a freedom for a girl in India. She's been in Indian music videos, met celebrities, traveled all over the country! To sum it up, we hung out and she invited me to go on a few of her adventures with her. Can you say ecstatic? With this girl the possibilities are endless.
Now don't go thinking I've becoming some religion fanatic and believe praying (in my case more complaining) will get me everything I want. However, I really feel that I had closed a door that I thought had no opportunities for me and he/she (the Spirit) reopened. Maybe to some of you its just a coincidence, but to I like to believe it's more.
What do you guys think? Have you ever had something like this happen to you? If so, I would love to hear your stories. Was it God or just good timing in my case? Until next time.
