If I Could Write A Letter...

If I could write a letter to India, this is what I would write...

Dear India,
you really threw me for a loop there. Everything I learned and experienced was unexpected. Actually, the first lesson I learned in India was to not expect anything or to just expect the unexpected. You are a country full of surprises and challenges that shape the characters of your people so that they know and understand perseverance. I thought I respected this personality trait before, but after experiencing you, India (the heat, mosquitoes, sweaty public buses, etc), I respect it even more.

India, do you realize how beautiful of a country you are? Your thick jungles, rushing rivers and rising mountains show your natural beauty.  Your uneven, cracked side walks, bumpy roads, screaming bus drivers and feral goats show a bit quirkier side of you. I can appreciate a quirky personality.Within you I found a diverse group of people who had one sole thing in common: deep spirituality. The strong sense of faith in religion and life I found in my friends, I hadn't found in many other people. I mean my friends would pray before, during, and after studying. At first, honestly, it kind of blew my mind. However, now I understand that within God they find a guide for every aspect of their life.
I never thought that I would develop such deep relationships during my time abroad. Before I thought friendships had shorter limits, more restraints. Now I see how strong bonds can really be. Through every day little actions, my friends showed me how much they cared. They would go out of their way to let me know I was significant, to make me feel that I was heard and someone cared about me. Over time, I learned to do the same with them. The strong morals, values, concepts and beliefs you have are something several other parts of the world could take a lesson in. So, India, with all you have to show and offer the world I can't help, but wonder why you don't?
Why do you allow corrupt individuals to be your leader? They hold you back from progress and are only interested in their selfish needs. They give you a bad name and cause world leaders to look down upon you. Is that what you really want India?
Why, when you have so many natural resources, do you allow other countries to exploit you? You take in more then you give out leaving your economy weak and trying to catch up. The problem is the other countries have cars and you're not even in a horse and buggy. You allow others to bully you. When will you step up and stand your ground? How long will you allow for your continued exploitation?
During my stay abroad I often found myself wondering India, if you were a real country or not. Your people are so divided. Division between the castes, religion (Muslims and Hindus especially), North-South, and light skin-dark skin. Despite all these division all these people are still Indian, so why do they allow such trivial matters to divide them? It is this same division that keeps you weak, India. Your people need to stop and realize they are all one. It is time, India, that you show the world that you are more than a "developing country." Show them that you are part of this world and that have so much to both teach and learn.
